The Calgary Airport Authority has selected Altitude Infrastructure Group, a joint venture between Colas and SNC-Lavalin, for the planning and design phase of Calgary International Airport’s (YYC) multi-year runway rehabilitation project.

The 115 million CAD construction project was announced in August 2021 and has been awarded 57.5 million CAD in funding from the government’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program.

YYC Runway Rehabilitation
The runway rehabilitation project will ensure YYC is able to safely operate while meeting the demands of passenger and cargo traffic over the next 40 years
Chris Miles, VP Operations & Infrastructure, said:

A project of this scale and cost is a critical part of YYC’s future as one of Canada’s busiest travel and cargo hubs. Standard General, Colas Projects, and SNC-Lavalin have proven reputations for delivering efficient, high quality and safe results. We look forward to collaborating with them on the next phase of this project.

YYC’s west runway was originally constructed in 1939 and was designed for lighter aircraft. Multiple projects have been completed over the past 80 years to maintain its structural capacity and prolong the runway’s lifespan. However, the runway is now reaching the end of its useful life and a full rehabilitation is required to ensure the airport’s operations remain safe and efficient.

The project will remove and replace the west runway, including full-depth structural and electrical rehabilitation. The runway’s approaches, lighting and infrastructure will also be modernised.

Stéphane Brondino, Project Manager for Colas Projects said:

As longstanding experts in airport infrastructure, we are truly proud to be part of this overhaul project on a runway that is a cornerstone of Alberta’s economy and tourism industry.

The project’s planning and design phases will take place in 2022 before construction begins in 2023, creating up to 300 local jobs.
